Surface aerators operate by agitation of surface water. Agitation the water will increase water and air contact and the mixing effects oxygenates the water. This are often simple mechanical aeration methods without compressors and are easier to service assuming that it is not a major breakage. Surface aerators will often not address lower depths of the water column and are therefore more suited for shallower applications where the risk of stratification is lower. If the pond requiring aeration is a deep water pond then a bottom diffused aeration system would be better for the job.
