Diatoms are a key part of the ecosystem as they are net oxygen producers. This mean that they produce more than they use. These one celled microorganisms also known as golden-brown algae, account for 25% of all primary production. Without going too far in depth about diatoms and their benefits it’s easy to see that you would much rather have these guys in your pond compared to other algae types like blue-green. One smart and simple way to have a more friendly algae population is to promote their growth by fertilising or feeding them. This will assist in producing a thriving diatom population that will both produce oxygen and compete with other algae species.
