Welcome to the Clearwater Lakes and Ponds blog

Welcome to the Clearwater Lakes and Ponds blog.  For our inaugural post I thought it best to explain our philosophy on how we improve the water bodies we work with.   I’m a big believer in mother knows best and when I mean mother I mean mother nature (sorry Mum, you know best too!!).  Most of the problems faced when managing private water bodies aren’t actually problems, they’re symptoms.  If a water body is out of balance then that usually shows up in the form of excessive growth or algae or weeds, odours, fish kills or generally poor water quality and if you only treat the symptoms then you’re not fixing the problem and may be doomed to spend good time and money in a treat and repeat cycle.  For example, if we take excessive algae or aquatic weed growth, these are usually symptoms of the larger problem of nutrient imbalance, that is, there’s too much nutrient in your system and this is feeding them.  Now you can go and treat them with chemicals and if the right chemical is selected and applied correctly then you’ll get a good result but this result won’t last and if you do nothing else then this will actually increase your problem because the dead rotting vegetation will break down in the water body and become a food source for the next generation of algae or weed.  That’s great for the guys that sell chemicals but you need to break this cycle.

Our preferred treatment method is to look at the overall picture and work out why these symptoms are appearing in the first place and then look at some of the tools we have available to fix the problem, not just the symptom.  If mother nature is out of whack and not happy then we need to make her happy again.  Unfortunately there’s no such thing as a silver bullet or magical product that’s going to fix all of your problems.  If someone’s telling you otherwise then you may want to get a second opinion.  If there is a silver bullet then let me know because it will make my job a lot easier and I’ll be able to count my hundred dollar bills in the comfort of my private jet.

Those of us that live in the real world and do this professionally know that there’s no one size fits all for improving water bodies and draw from a tool chest of products and methods to best suit the individual needs and circumstances of the client.  Some of the tools in the chest include aeration systems (customised to suit the application), biological augmentation (using mother natures little helpers – beneficial bacteria), selective planting and/or harvesting of aquatic/wetland plants, floating treatment wetlands and appropriately used chemicals.

We prefer to use natural methods to improve our client’s water bodies and our vast experience has enabled us to provide expert advice, products and services to achieve our client’s goals.  We love working with like minded people so if you’d like to improve your water body with natural, biological methods then give us a call, we’d love to help.
